   CCTV.COM   2003-07-10 15:07:29
Parts of the embankment of the Huaihe River in Huoqiu County of east China's Anhui Province are now in serious danger due to river's surging waters, according to Xinhua reporters at the site Thursday.

Currently, a large number of soldiers, government officials and local people were busy strengthening the dykes in the Jiangjiahu section of the Huaihe River to prevent them from collapsing, they said.

The water level of the Huaihe River is rising quickly as a result of torrential rains over the past two days, and the flooding at Jiangjiahu is especially serious.

Jiangjiahu is a flood diversion area covering 46.7 square kilometers with a population of 19,000. The area has been flooded 16 times to divert floodwaters from the Huaihe River.

Local flood control officials said if the flooding continues and becomes more serious, the Jiangjiahu area could be used again to divert floodwaters from the Huaihe River.
