South Korea's President Roh Moo-Hyun wrapped up his visit to China on Thursday. Roh told a gathering of businesspeople that the ROK and China should forge closer ties to boost economic development in northeast Asia.

While addressing at a gathering of businesspeople, Roh Moo-Hyun started on a personal note, reflecting on what he had seen that morning. "I went to two meaningful places this morning. One is the first ROK temporary government's office. It is a place that brought the hope of independence and is of great historical importance. Shanghai, together with the temporary government, is remembered forever in the heart of the ROK people as the land of hope."

A brief visit to Shanghai's Pudong Development Zone also left a favorable impression on the South Korean leader. He expressed great interest in future investment in the area and said Shanghai was a very important city in Sino-ROK trade.

Roh Moo-Hyun said, "About 28 percent of trade between the two countries is in Shanghai. Last year, more than 30 percent of the ROK investment in China was in Shanghai. A key focus is the ROK's high-end technology investment. So Shanghai is very important to the economic cooperation of the two countries."

He also called for those cooperative areas to be expanded. He said there should be closer links in energy, resources, finance, environmental protection, IT and bio-technology.

At the same time, a cooperative framework for long-term, shared human resources and technology should be worked out to boost the economies of northeast Asia.
