Following the visit of a Chinese special envoy to Pyongyang, China has repeated its call for a peaceful solution to the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula. However, China also said that the DPRK's security concerns should be addressed.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said the Chinese government consistently holds the position that peace should be maintained and that nuclearization should be prevented on the Korean peninsula.

Quan Quan said, "We firmly believe that the DPRK nuclear issue must be resolved through peaceful dialogue, and the DPRK's valid concerns for their own security should also be addressed."

Kong Quan said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo has held in-depth talks with DPRK officials in Pyongyang on its nuclear standoff with the US.

When asked whether British Prime Minister Tony Blair will discuss the DPRK nuclear issue during his upcoming visit to the US, Japan, South Korea and China, the spokesman said it was likely to be on the agenda.

Kong Quan also said China welcomed the establishment of the new Governing Council in Iraq.
