Xu-yu County, which is located at the lower reaches of the Huaihe river in east China's Jiangsu province, has been the hardest-hit area during this year's flood season. As many as 530,000 people have suffered from the floods. Local authorities have made tremendous efforts to evacuate and resettle the flood victims.
Meanwhile, great losses in agriculture have occurred along the Huaihe river due to the severe floods.
All the villages, trees, farmlands and fish-pools on the bank of this river have been submerged by the recent floods. A rescue team is searching around Xuyu for villagers who might have been left behind. The county has a population of 730,000 and the life of more than half of them has been badly disrupted by the floods.
So far, almost 140,000 of the victims have been resettled at various locations and given daily necessities. According to Wang Longde, Vice Minister of Health, all these places are disinfected daily; drinking water and garbage are sterilized. The most outstanding problem for the moment is a shortage of medicines.
Agriculture has suffered the greatest losses in Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The Ministry of Agriculture has sent two work teams to the disaster-stricken areas to aid in fighting the floods and resuming production. Local authorities and residents are sparing no efforts to minimize losses. Agricultural experts have helped local farmers deal with the grim situation by planting new crops and getting ready for sowing in the coming fall. Market management has also been strengthened in order to guarantee the circulation of agricultural produce. With all the measures taken, a strong economic recovery is expected for next year.
