Chinese and US security officials have met in Beijing for talks on strategic security issues. The talks on Monday were the second round of a security dialogue framework the two countries agreed to last year.

After discussions with Chinese officials, visiting US Undersecretary of State John Bolton said the US was committed to a peaceful resolution of the DPRK nuclear issue.

US Undersecretary of State John Bolton said he exchanged ideas with China's Vice Foreign Ministers, Zhang Yesui, and Wang Yi, on a range of security issues, including the DPRK's nuclear program.

He stressed that Washington was seeking a peaceful settlement to resolve its stand-off with Pyongyang.

"President Bush has made it clear that what we seek here is peaceful dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear weapons," Bolton said.

The undersecretary said the US had no intention of invading the DPRK. He said Washington was open to more negotiations with Pyongyang and would be flexible on the format of talks. But he insisted that future talks must be multilateral and include other major parties concerned if they are to be substantial.

"Both Japan and South Korea and Russia must be included in the next round of talks if they are to be substant," the Undersecretary added.

Bolton did not give a specific date as to when, and in what format, the next round of talks will take place.

Undersecretary Bolton will meet with China's Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing on Tuesday. He'll then travel to South Korea and Japan.
