Chinese President Hu Jintao met Governor General of Papua New Guinea Silas Atopare on Wednesday. The president said China values relations with the island nation.

Papua New Guinea is located just south of the Equator, almost directly below China. China established diplomatic relations with Papua New Guinea, or PNG, in 1976, shortly after it achieved independence in 1975. In his meeting with the governor general, Hu Jintao said China valued its relations with PNG and supported its efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and develop its economy.

Hu pointed to the healthy development of relations between the two countries. He said China believes all countries should treat one another equally and in a friendly manner, whether large or small, rich or poor, strong or weak.

Hu Jintao noted that Papua New Guinea is China's largest trading partner and investment destination among south Pacific island nations.

The main Chinese exports to PNG are textiles, clothing, foot ware and light industrial products. Chinese main imports are oil and timber. Bilateral trade volume currently exceeds 230 million US dollars.

Governor General Atopare thanked China for its support to his country's economic and social development. Atopare said his country will continue to support the one China policy and work to improve relations.
