China's foreign ministry has said that the build－up of the nation's national defense and military deployment is a necessity for the protection of its territorial integrity. Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan made the comments at a regular press briefing on Thursday.
He was refuting the recent annual US report on China's military strength. He said some Americans exaggerated China's military expense in order to inflate the mainland's so－called threat to Taiwan, so that they could find excuses to sell weapons to Taiwan.
Kong Quan said China insists on a peaceful solution to the reunification of the mainland and Taiwan and separatists are the real threat to the region's stability. He said China hopes the US will abide by its commitments to the One China policy and go against separatist forces.
