CPC delegates discuss urban construction

Guangdong province's Dongguan City is located in the region of the Pearl River Delta. It was one of the earliest cities to carry out the "opening up and reform policy" in China. 20 years ago, Dongguan was an area primarily limited to processing materials. It has now developed into a center for China's large-scale manufacturing industry. Delegates from Guangdong have been discussing the province's development and future at the ongoing CPC National Congress.

Dongguan has been largely adjusting its traditional industrial structure in recent years. Since it adopted IT as its dominant industry, Dongguan has been inviting outside investment, targeting a large number of IT enterprises and related ventures. In 2001, its gross export value reached some 1.9 billion US dollars. One of the delegates from Guangdong, Tong Xing, says their goal is to become a base for the international manufacturing industry. He said, "In the new century, we'll not only strengthen our competitiveness but also put more emphasis on industrial structure and escalation. We're especially going to promote scientific research and development, as well as improve logistics and gradually decrease the traditional manufacturing sector. Dongguan aims high, hoping to become a city with an advanced manufacturing industry and good service. In the meantime, we also want to create a better environment for working as well as living."

Tong also says a significant number of local people are already leading a relatively comfortable life in the city. But he adds that the city will continue doing all it can to increase its modernization by 2010. China's mission to build a "fairly well-off society" will help to speed up Dongguan's urban construction.
