| China, ROK to strengthen economic cooperation |

The Republic of Korea's President Roh Moo－hyun is also focusing on his country's future economic cooperation with China. Senior officials in his entourage have held talks with their Chinese counterparts in Beijing to work on the plans, especially in trade and environmental protection.
President Roh had lunch with over 200 ROK and Chinese entrepreneurs on Tuesday. Roh said Republic of Korea is looking forward to closer cooperation with China in information technology, resources and environmental protection. He spoke of ROK companies' optimism about business opportunities in China, especially in the Western Development Project, the Beijing 2008 Olympics, and the Shanghai 2010 World Expo. China shares the enthusiasm.
Yu Ping, general secretary of China Committee on the Promotion of Int'l Trade, said, "We'd like to strengthen the cooperation in the information technology. We would also want to promote cooperation of the two countries' small and medium－sized enterprises."
Ways to promote cooperation in various sectors have already been considered. One major area is environmental protection. Tuesday morning, the environmental protection authorities of the two countries signed a memorandum. The emphasis is on joint efforts on preventing sandstorms by establishing a regional supervision network and sharing data and experience. The memorandum also underlines the importance of promoting the environmental protection industry in the two countries.
ROK Minister of Environment Han Myeong－sook said, "The Republic of Korea has invested huge amounts of money into environmental protection. As a neighboring nation, China has a similar problem and experience as South Korea in environmental issues. So there's great potential for future cooperation."
"We will provide enough information on China's environmental protection industry. We will also show foreign investors the opportunities and preferential policies," said Xie Zhenhua, director of China State Environmental Protection Administration.
The professional forum was held Tuesday afternoon, attracting over 100 companies. The Commerce Ministers of the two countries also met at the same time. This follows a discussion on increased ROK investment in China, such as in western regional development, banking and insurance.
