With the opening of the 16th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, an increasing number of social science books are gaining popularity at Beijing's major book stores.

Booksellers are working to meet the stepped-up demand.

The ongoing CPC's 16th National Congress has brought more social science books to shelves and attracted eager buyers wanting to know more about the proceedings.

A reader from Shanxi province has already chosen five books on the topic -- and isn't finished yet.

He said: "As a Communist Party member at the basic level, I'm very concerned with the ongoing CPC's 16th National Congress. The "Three Represents" thought is a guideline for the Party and people in the new century. Keeping abreast of the knowledge will benefit my future work."

One manager of the Wangfujing Xinhua Book Store said that the sales volume of these kinds of books has increased by as much as 60 percent during the past two months -- with as many as 2,000 books being sold per day.

Many readers are also snapping up and making inquiries about copies of President Jiang Zemin's speeches, which along with books on the history of CPC -- remain at the top of best-sellers.

A student reader said: "Books on President Jiang's speech and the "Three Represents" thought are very popular on campus these days. We circulate these books and even hold discussions in our dormitory."

Major stores around Beijing have been setting up special counters to make it easier for enthusiastic book-buyers to get their hands on the hot-selling books.
