We visit a small town called Zigui. Parts of it now lie in the depths of this lake.

Zigui is turning into a ghost town.

But Zhou Zonggui refuses to leave.

Zhou said, "I miss the old Zigui town very much."

Zhou shows me what used to be the town center, which now lies beneath a small boat on the lake. And it won't be long before his home meets the same fate.

Most of the villagers have moved to higher ground. With the help of government funding, they've built a new Zigui on the mountainside. They've tried to save as much as possible, hanging on to the life they used to know.

These old trees are Liu Fengke's lifelong friends. They've been transplanted along with him.

Liu Fengke, villager of old Zigui town, said, "When I look at the trees, they remind me of my life in the old Zigui."

But not everything can be relocated.

Farmers Tan Kai and Wu Chengzhen had to leave behind their familiar fields. Their income from farm produce is now only a third of what it used to be.

A relocated farmer Tan Kai said, "I miss our old life, as we have lost our work place."

Wu Chengzhen, another relocated farmer, said, "We used to grow a variety of crops, but now, we can only grow oranges."

This is not the modern life farmers dreamed of.

Zigui is disappearing as progress moves on.

And for the villagers, the benefits may never be enough to smooth over the cracks.
