A new era was ringing in during a concert in Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall on Tuesday night. The musical show paid tribute to the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which opens on Friday.

Audiences were treated to an impressive lineup of musicians. Many of the pieces had won the Golden Bell award, a top prize in China's music circles. One of the highlights was Echo from the Earth Building --based on the Hakka people of east China's Fujian Province. The widely-acclaimed conductor, 73-year-old Zheng Xiaoying, also from a Hakka family, held the baton for the occasion.

The 37-minute creation has five movements, starting with a rendition of work chants played by trombones. Brass, wind and drums are all meant to symbolise the strength, courage and unity of the Hakka people. 74-year-old Li Tiansheng, hailed as the king of folk song by locals, sang a traditional folk song.
