Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan tune in to CPC Congress

The opening of the Congress is also attracting attention in the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions as well as Taiwan. All major television stations in the regions broadcast live coverage of the event. Overseas Chinese including Chinese embassy and consulate staff took in the congresses opening day.

Large numbers of residents in Hong Kong and Macao banded together to watch the coverage. Many business and commercial leaders in the regions say the Congress will lead China into a new phase of development. They maintain the "One Country, two Systems" principle is a reliable foundation for China and the key to prosperity in Hong Kong and Macao.

Representatives of the Hong Kong Youth Association have described the 16th CPC National Congress as a vital meeting for China's future. Taiwan media have also offered extensive coverage of the event. They say General Secretary Jiang Zemin's speech expresses good will in cross-strait relations. Taiwan's stock markets also reacted positively.

Overseas Chinese including those in the United States, Russia and Australia also watch the opening ceremony of the CPC congress on CCTV International. Staff at the Chinese embassy in Washington say they will examine the report in detail and work harder for stable Sino-US relations.
