In 2004, many Hong Kong film and television studios began adopting the Hong Kong model of movie theater operation on the mainland, their objective being to cover every city in the country. This huge market of more than 1.3 billion people has become the huge rear base for the Hong Kong industry.
"At that time when our economy was not doing well, we had tourists from the mainland and we had CEPA. That helped a lot," said Joseph Wong Wing-ping, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology of the HKSAR government.
"The central government tells Hong Kong that it is part of the family and as such places Hong Kong before other WTO members.This makes the people feel that the central government really does care about Hong Kong," said Peter Woo Kwong Ching, chairman of the HKSAR Trade Development Council.
The nation's support for Hong Kong has had various manifestations at different times in the past ten years: Support in times of difficulty; encouragement after the storm. Every major achievement has been a fresh inspiration for Hong Kong.
Everyone in Hong Kong has felt the change, and everyone continues to feel the change in every aspect of their life. Such change was unknown before the return of Hong Kong; the experience is something wholly new.
Holding their annual meetings on the eve of the Chinese New Year is a long-standing tradition followed by Hong Kong companies, but Hong Kong had not seen an annual meeting of this scale for a number of years. Spring really did seem to be in the air during this Chinese New Year season ten years after Britain handed Hong Kong back to China. And although the passions of 2006 are now history, new highs continue to be set in all of Hong Kong's economic indicators, something that seemed unimaginable only a few years ago.
At this the first gathering of Hong Kong Olympic equestrian volunteers, no less than 20,000 were registered, out of which only 200 could emerge victorious. Another 1,600 lucky volunteers, however, would be chosen from two more rounds of selections to join the most outstanding riders as the 2008 Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Volunteers.
This is Hong Kong on the eve of the day China won the right to hold the 2008 Olympics, and clearly the people of the city were caught up in the excitement. The celebrations continued unabated until dawn.
On the eve of the day China was awarded the right to host the 2008 Olympics, 78-year-old Henry Fok Ying-tung, well-respected for his life-long devotion to the country and to Hong Kong, dived into his home pool for a swim. Donald Tsang Am-kuen, Hong Kong Chief Executive, called him a model citizen, and at this happy time, this model citizen was happy for his country.
"This was what we were all waiting for, the IOC's decision. Tim Fok Tsun-Ting, chairman of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee.
At the time the country was selected to hold the Olympics, I was in Moscow and was very proud to be a part of it. At the time I thought, now that Beijing had won the right to host the Olympics, it would be like a dream come true if Hong Kong could get a share of that," said Henry Fok Ying-tung, Vice-Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee .
One month after the end of the Athens Olympics, Chinese Olympic gold medalists visited Hong Kong, where over 80,000 people from all walks of life were able to get an up-close look at them. Through these heroes the people were able to share in the nation's glory and their national pride was strengthened, while the people of Hong Kong were given something to make them happy, joyous and proud. But this time when the Chinese Olympic gold medalists visited Hong Kong it was different from the previous 5 occasions because of the special significance of this year: the fact everyone was aware that China will be hosting the 2008 Olympics.
"These are the things I wore at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the hat and jacket," said Deng Huixian, Hong Kong Olympics volunteer.
This was Deng Huixian's most beautiful memory, participating in the Olympics and serving the Chinese delegation.
"I was given this by the Chinese team,and it's something I'm very proud of," said Deng Huixian, Hong Kong Olympics volunteer.
Just like Deng Huixian, many Hong Kong residents began following the Chinese delegation and now serve as volunteers for every Olympics.
"As they raised their heads and stood up straight, I really admired them and felt proud of my country," said Deng Huixian, Hong Kong Olympics volunteer.
