The Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China.
The Nakhi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India.

The people of the Naxi ethnic minority mostly live in the Naxi Autonomous County in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, while the rest live in Sichuan and Tibet.Today, some 188,000 Naxi people are living in the county of Lijiang. They account for almost 60 per cent of the county´s total population of 325,000.
Lugu Lake lies 200 kilometers (approximately 124 miles) from the center of Lijiang City, on the border between Ninglang County in Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province.
According to the geologists´ research, for about 400 million years the area around Jade Dragon Snow Mountain was the ocean and it was during the last 600 thousand years that the different landscapes had come into being because of the uprising of the lithosphere.
The remarkable community of Baoshan Ancient Stone City, usually called Baoshan, is labout 130km north of Lijiang. Baoshan Stone Village (baoshan shicheng) is located on a Herculean rock in the Jinsha River Valley.Virtually everything in the village is made of stone.
Shuhe ancient city is four kilometres north from the Lijiang ancient city, known as the spring’s town. In Shuhe town, houses are very orderly. A pork, known as "Jiuding Longtan", also known as the "Dragon spring" , is around by willows and cypresses.
