 Lhasa, meaning"the Land of the Gods"in Tibetan, is the capital of the Xizang Autonomous Region, as well as the centre of Tibetan politics, economics, culture, traffic and religion. Located on the north bank of the Lhasa River, one of the tributaries of the Yarlongzangbu river, Lhasa is an ancient city with a history of more than 1,300years.The urban district covers an area of 32 square kilometres with a population of 110,000.The altitude of 3,650 metres on the valley floor makes this large city the highest in the world.
