The highest river in the world--The Yarlongzangbu River

The Yarlongzangbu River, referred to as "Yangqiabuzangbu"in ancient Tibetan documents, means "water flowing down from the highest mountain peak".It originates from the Jiemayangzong glacier in the icy, snowy mountains on the northern slopes of the central Himalayas. Known as the Moquan River in its upper reaches, as it runs eastward it is joined by such tributaries as the Lhakezangbu, the Niocu and the Lhasa Rivers. It passes on through the Luoyu region of the eastern Himalayas, then flows southwards into India where it is called the Brahmaputra River, and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The total length of the Yarlongzangbu River is 2,900 kilometres(the part in our country is 2,057 kilometres). The drainage area is 930,000 square kilometrres(240,000 sq. km. in our country). With an average altitude for the riverbed of 3,000 metres, this is the highest great river in the world.

The gorges at the river bend on the lower reaches of the Yarlongzangbu River have a water power volume potential rare in the world, where a hydroelectric power station with an installed capacity of 40,000,000 KW. could be the largest in the world, even 14 times larger than the Hydro-electric Power Station at Gezhou Dam, which is at present the largest in China with a capacity of 2,700,000 KW.
