The US Army has dispatched about 1,000 infantry soldiers to Uzbekistan. These are the first US ground troops to reach central Asia after the September 11th attacks. This followed talks with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Uzbekistan's president, Islam Karimov offered the US Air Forces access to military airfields. But Karimov emphasized that the offer was only for humanitarian aid and no air strikes or ground troops would be allowed to launch from Uzbek territory. Rumsfeld also met Turkish Prime Minister Bulent (Bu-land) Ecevit (Edje-vit) on the final stop of his whirlwind diplomatic tour of the region. Rumsfeld said the meeting went well but he didn't disclose any details.
