US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has begun a mission to strengthen support in the Islamic world for the US war against terrorism. US President George W Bush says Rumsfeld's trip is intended to show key Muslim leaders the US resolve in fighting the terrorists.
During his short visit to Saudia Arabia on Wednesday, Rumsfeld met King Fahd, Defense Minister Prince Sultan and the Crown prince Abdallah. Local media say Rumsfeld conveyed regards from President Bush, but there were no other details of the talks.
Rumsfeld also plans to visit Oman, Egypt and Uzbekistan before returning to the United States. Saudi Arabia has pledged to stand shoulder to shoulder with Washington. It cut diplomatic ties with the Taliban one week ago. But the kingdom has so far refused to allow the United States to use Saudi bases to lauch military strikes against Afghanistan.
