US President George W. Bush announced on Monday that the US is beginning to make progress on its "war against terrorism" on both the financial and diplomatic fronts. This was during a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, in Washington.
The president thanked the emergency workers for their contributions, and spoke of the progress in the anti-terrorism campaign. He cited hundreds of arrests in the US and overseas, international cooperation, and the initial success in seizing assets of Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida organisation.
The president said:"Thus far, we have frozen 6 million dollars in bank accounts linked to terrorist activity. We've frozen 30 al-Qaida accounts in the United States and 20 overseas. And we are just beginning."
The president outlined the US military build-up, including deployment of 29,000 US troops and several hundred military aircraft, though he gave no hint as to if, or when, he would order a military response.
Meanwhile, at a State Department briefing, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said President Bush has also approved plans to help unspecified anti-Taliban groups inside Afghanistan, and to aid Afghan refugees fleeing to neighboring Pakistan.
