US Attorney General John Ashcroft says that the United States would need new tools if it is to prevent further attacks on US soil.
He says that he expects Congress to decide on an anti terrorism package, including surveillance measures soon, but says that "talk will not prevent terrorism." He said that these new tools were needed to "disrupt, interrupt, delay and prevent terrorist activities." His statements reflect widely held views in the US and among coalition members. Ashcroft also warned on Sunday, that terrorist attacks against the US may increase once the country responds to the atrocities committed on September 11th. He says that authorities believe there are still terrorists at large in the US ready to unleash further devastation. Meanwhile, authorities say that troops and equipment continue to be deployed in the Afghan region and continue to demand that the Taliban turn over Osama bin Laden and the leaders of the al Qaeda network to avoid a US attack. The Taliban has rejected the demand, saying that bin Laden is under their control and they are hiding him for his own protection.
