Afghanistan's former King, Mohammad Zahir Shah, told an American delegation that he is on America's side in the fight against terrorism.
The exiled monarch met with members of a US Congressional delegation, together with a senior delegation from the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, to determine possible ways to overthrow the Taliban. During his talks with the US congressmen, he also said that he would back any US-led force to oust the hard-line Taliban regime from Afghanistan. Republican Congressman Curt Weldon, head of the US delegation, said America hoped that the former king would play a key role in marshalling anti-Taliban forces. Meanwhile, the Northern Alliance is helping to hold the most strategic pass in northern Afghanistan against the ruling Taliban. Leaders of the Northern Alliance say that Osamma bin Laden is still in Afghanistan, and is hiding in the same place as Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
