Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets of Washington to protest against possible military action in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Anti-war protesters also marched in Germany and Australia demanding the United States and its allies refrain from retaliation.
Flanked by dozens of police in riot gear, the protesters in Washington carried signs reading, "No War," calling on the Bush administration to avoid military conflict.
The protests were mostly peaceful, but there were sporadic clashes between authorities and demonstrators.
In the German financial capital Frankfurt, about 1,000 people protested against a military reponse to the September 11 attacks on the United States.
Union members, peace advocates and a local Afghan group gathered under the motto "Solidarity yes, war no." Speakers said the current crisis would not be solved through violence.
Anti-war protesters also marched in Sydney on Saturday, calling on the Australian government to limit its military role in the war against terrorism.
Marchers blocked George Street carrying banners reading "stop This Racist War" and "Money for Jobs, Not War".
