US President Urges Passengers to Get Back on Planes
FRI, SEP 28, 2001
In an unusual move to bolster public support for air travel, US President George W. Bush flew to Chicago on a United Airlines passenger jet on Thursday. The US president called on Americans to get on board and exercise their right to travel.

The US airline industry has suffered massive financial losses since hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on September 11. Speaking to a group of airline employees, Bush urged Americans to "get on the airlines". He said that the American public should not live in fear and should exercise its right to travel.

George W. Bush said: "We must stand against terror by going back to work. Everybody here that showed up for work at this important industry is making a statement that terrorism will not stand, that the evil doers will not be able to terrorise America and our work and our people."

Meanwhile, he announced new measures to improve airline safety. The plan includes providing 500 million US dollars to fortify cockpit doors and implement federal oversight of airport inspections. He also said they were going to dramatically increase the numbers of federal air marshals on their airplanes. He said the world is beginning to see the best of America.
