Kenyans Evacuate From Pakistan for Fear of US Attacks
THU, SEP 27, 2001
Kenyans in Pakistan have begun their evacuation in an emergency move following fears of possible U.S. attacks on neighboring Afghanistan.

Media here reported on Thursday that 14 members from four families of the Kenyan Embassy staff in Pakistan jetted into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi on Wednesday, while seven embassy staff are still left behind in Pakistan.

A Kenyan Foreign Ministry official was quoted as saying that another 155 Kenyan students scattered at various universities across Pakistan would be immediately evacuated if the situation in Pakistan got out of hand.

The evacuation of employees of non-governmental organizations and their families is being handled by their respective employers, the official said.

Meanwhile, all Kenyans traveling overseas have been asked to register with the country's diplomatic missions near them.

This would make it possible for them to be identified in case of emergencies, said Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Obure.
