The US Senate on Friday approved a 15-billion US dollar rescue package for the US aviation industry, which has been badly hit since last week's terrorist attacks.
The bill, which was passed by an overwhelming vote, will provide 5 billion US dollars in immediate aid. Another 10 billion will be in loan guarantees. Airline officials have campaigned hard for the aid, saying the situation could drive several major carriers into bankruptcy. All major airlines have seen a dramatic fall in passenger demand this week, and thousands of workers have now been laid off. The House is expected to approve the bill and send it to the president for signature.
