The US Defense Department has ordered more Air Force planes to the Persian Gulf in preparation for attacks on suspected terrorist supporters. The US decision to step up military action has drawn support from countries around the globe.
Israeli authorities have agreed to open the country's airspace to US forces, but say it will not be directly involved in a military attack. Spain says it, too, will allow the United States to use its two southern airbases. The US military will also have access to Hungarian and Slovakian airspace and airports. At the same time, many world leaders are underlining the key role of the United Nations in launching any military campaign. Russian president Putin and French President Chirac say an international mechanism, especially the UN and its Security Council, must be engaged in fighting terrorism. Sweden says that, while the country supports US military action against terrorism, it must be within the UN's scope, cannot violate international law and must not affect civilians.
