Afghanistan Prepares for Possible US Attack
SAT, SEP 22, 2001
Many Afghans are preparing to leave the capital, Kabul, after a warning from US President George W. Bush. Bush says the country's Taliban rulers must crack down on Saudi exile Osama bin Laden and his followers, or share their fate.

Many families, fearing for their safety, loaded their belongings onto pick-up trucks and headed out of the capital.

On a main road leading north of Kabul, men pushed carts piled high with pots and pans, metal trunks and tattered carpets - all they possessed. Others just walked away from the capital.

The World Food Program which is handing out bread, says it has enough supplies to keep bakeries in Kabul going for the next three weeks. But with many stores in Afghanistan closed, prices are rocketing.

Since the crisis began, thousands of Afghans have headed for neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan. Both countries have now closed their borders to more refugees. Now all that Kabul residents can do is wait.
