United States Marines and sailors from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina said goodbye to their friends and families Thursday morning as they loaded up three ships and prepared to deploy to the Mediterranean.
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit was scheduled to leave before last week's terrorists attacks, but officials say the US response decision has changed the mission. US Secretary of the Army, Thomas White, said his troops are ready to conduct, what he called, "sustained land combat operations" as part of US President Bush's promised war against terrorism.
He also told reporters that a deployment order signed by US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday includes Army as well as Air Force units. Senior defense officials said that combat aircraft, including F-16 Fighting Falcons, and F-15 Eagles will be preceded by Air Force airlift control teams from bases in California and New Jersey.
