US Disappointed with Afghanistan's Decision
FRI, SEP 21, 2001
The United States says that the Afghan clerics' final recommendation, which asked exiled Saudi billionaire Osama bin Laden to leave the country voluntarily, fell short of expectations. The White House urged Afghanistan to hand over the prime suspect in last week's terrorist attack.

A White House spokesman said that the recommendations made by Afghanistan's Islamic clerics didn't meet America's requirements. US President George W Bush had demanded that Osama bin Laden to be turned over to "responsible authorities" and the Taliban close terrorist camps in Afghanistan.

Islamic clerics in Afghanistan held a two-day meeting, and Thursday's statement recommended that bin Laden was asked to leave Afghanistan but set no deadline for his departure. The statement also included a warning of a Jihad, or holy war against the United States if military action was used against Afghanistan's civilians.
