Taliban: Any US Attack to Lead to Acts of Revenge
SAT, SEP 15, 2001
Afghanistan's ruling Taliban is warning that any US military attack on the central Asian nation will lead to acts of revenge. The warning follows US Secretary of State Colin Powell's public acknowledgement that a group based in Afghanistan is suspected in this week's terrorist attacks in the United States.

As speculation mounts that the US might be planning airstrikes on Afghanistan, the Taliban regime had a message for President George W. Bush.

In Pakistan - one of the few countries to recognise the government - the Taliban's ambassador said again that Osama bin Laden was not invloved in this week's terror attacks.

Bin Laden has officially been named by the US government as a suspect in this investigations.

The Saudi dissident is being sheltered by the Talinban, though Kabul says it is prepared to extradite him if proof is given that he masterminded the US hijackings.

But the regime which rules most of Afghanistan says it will not tolerate US military action and will retaliate if Washington hits its territory.

Foreign aid workers have been streaming out of the country, heading for safer territory in neighbouring Pakistan.

They know they must move fast -- the US administration wants Pakistan to close its border in an effort to prevent bin Laden's operatives from leaving Afghan territory.

That's a move bound heighten fears that war is imminent, and shake people throughout this already tense region.
