In their first official reaction to the US-led coalition strikes on Afghanistan, the ruling Taliban militia declared the assault to be a "terrorist attack" and vowed that America "will never achieve its goal."
The statement was issued by the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef, soon after American and British forces launched the air strikes. The Taliban said they will "fight to the last breath."
The Taliban's Deputy Defense Minister Mullah Noor Ali later told the Qatar-based satellite station Al-Jazeera television, that they have shot down an unidentified plane in southern Afghanistan. But the Pentagon has immediately denied Taliban's claims.
Earlier today, Osama bin Laden, America's most wanted man, appeared on Al-Jazeera TV. Bin Laden said this is a "battle between believers and non-believers." He said Americans will never feel safe, unless Palestinians feel safe. He said America is "full of fear" and "God has given Americans back what they deserve. "
Bin Laden's taped statement was transmitted just two hours after the US and Britain began the attack on Taliban and al Qaeda targets.
The US has issued a warning to Americans around the world to be aware of possible terrorist retaliation against America.
