The South Korean government and people wholeheartedly supports the U.S. and British military strikes against Taliban, President Kim Dae-jung said on TV Monday morning.
The U.S. military strikes are justifiable as they are counterattacks aimed at punishing terrorism against the human being, said Kim, who was informed in advance of the planned U.S. actions through diplomatic channel and immediately ordered defense, foreign and home affairs ministers to take emergency measures right after the launch of the military operations.
The South Korean government will actively join and support the efforts by the international community to eradicate any inhumane terrorism around the globe as already expressed in a previous statement last month, added the president.
Kim will have a phone conversation with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush over measures following U.S. and British military strikes against Taliban, South Korean presidential spokesman Oh Hong-keun said.
"There was a request from the U.S. President George W. Bush to discuss several issues on the U.S. military counterattacks," said the spokesman.
Early Monday, South Korea convened a National Security Council (NSC) meeting to discuss issues on the U.S. and British military strikes against Afghanistan's Taliban.
The meeting presided over by President Kim Dae-jung discussed the humanitarian support for Afghanistan refugees as well as security measures for South Koreans there and support measures forthe United States.
Under a presidential order, the South Korean Ministry of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) put into force an emergency team in the early hours of Monday following the military strikes.
The team, launched at 1:45 a.m., made a crisis appraisal on the level of the U.S. attacks and discussed possible actions.
Meanwhile, the government decided to open the country's stock markets Monday as usual in spite of the military strikes against Taliban.
It was also announced that South Korea will provide one millionU.S. dollars worth of medicine and other humanitarian aid for refugees fleeing Afghanistan after the U.S. military strikes there.
