The Portuguese government "undoubtedly" supports the United States' military strikes on Taliban targets, Prime Minister Antonio Guterres said on Sunday night.
In his speech broadcast through TV, Guterres stressed the Portuguese government supports a war against terrorism but not one against the Muslim world.
He said so far the U.S. government has not asked Portugal for specific assistance.
Guterres asked the Portuguese people to hold a calm attitude and lead a normal life.
U.S. President George W. Bush announced on Sunday that the United States has started military strikes on Taliban targets and the Al-Qaeda organization led by Osama bin Laden, who has been accused by Washington of masterminding the September 11 attacks on the United States.
