Indonesian Hard-line Group Asks Govt to Sever Relations With U.S.

Indonesian hard-line Muslim group,the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), is scheduled to hold a massive demonstrationsin Jakarta Monday to condemn the United States attack on Afghanistan.

Talking to the Metro TV television station, FPI Chairman Habib Rizieq Shihab also asked all Muslims to besiege the U.S. embassy collectively starting Monday afternoon.

Habib also asked the government to sever diplomatic relations with the U.S. and its allies.

When the government severs relations with these countries, FPI then will call on jihad (holy war) in fighting the U.S. and its allies, he added.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Jihad paramilitary troops commander Ja'far Umar Thalib Monday also condemned the U.S. attack on Afghanistan.

He expressed the support to the Indonesian Ulema Council's last month statement, calling for jihad if the U.S. attacks Afghanistan.

Thalib said his groups still consider whether to join the demonstrations which was called by the FPI on Monday afternoon.

Separately, the U.S. embassy Monday advised Americans throughout Indonesia to consider their personal security situationcarefully.

The embassy also asked Americans to stay at home following the U.S. attack on Afghanistan on Sunday night, according to the MetroTV television station.
