The U.S.-led airstrike on Afghanistan Sunday night seemed to have achieved its objective and new rounds of strikes will follow in the coming days, French Defense Minister Alain Richard said Monday morning.
An eventual participation by France is under discussion and will be decided in days, Richard told the French radio Europe 1, adding that France could bring "different capacities, from special forces, air capacities to naval support."
"The United States has the capacity to accomplish the action and they do not need personnel (from us). France now represents a political support and an symbolic engagement," he said.
The French minister also said that ground operation will not necessarily follow air strikes in the U.S. action on the ruling Taliban in Kabul, which openly supports Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect behind the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
