Punishing waves of US-led attacks against selected terrorist and Al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan have horrified local residents, resulting in a mass exodus. Although long expected, the strikes still caught residents of the war-torn country by surprise. Many targets, including the airport in Kandahar, the headquarters of the Taliban militia and the Taliban command center in Kabul were destroyed. In response, Taliban fighters fired rifles and machine guns into the air. Witnesses said people were fleeing from the affected cities, despite the curfew. Meanwhile, Taliban officials said Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted man, had escaped unhurt.
