U.N. Warns Staff of Possible Anthrax Attack
THU, OCT 11, 2001
The United Nations has warned its staff members of a possible terrorist attack using anthrax or other chemical agents.

In an advisory from U.N. security chief Michael McCann circulated on Wednesday, the world body urged its staff to watch out for suspicious letters or parcels "in light of the current crisis."

"If you feel that you have come into contact with a suspicious letter, parcel or package, please quarantine the item" and notify U.N. security or the New York City police, the advisory said.

The U.N. advisory, issued following the death of a Florida man from anthrax, a bacteria that can be used as a biological weapon, included 14 questions and answers about anthrax from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and listed 11 possible indicators of a suspicious letter or parcel such as an unusual or unknown postmark or sender, excessive or inadequate postage, excessive weight, protruding wires and suspicious odors.

The U.N. headquarters were evacuated after terror attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington on September 11.
