U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Thursday it has received information that there is the possibility of more terrorist attacks both inside and outside the United States in the next few days.
"Certain information, while not specific as to target, gives the government the reason to believe that there may be additional terrorist attacks within the United States and against U.S. interests overseas over the next several days," the FBI said in a statement.
Other U.S. officials cited a high possibility of such attacks by individuals linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.
The officials said the information is not specific but " credible." They declined to say how or where the information was obtained.
The FBI alert was based on "new intelligence received since Monday," the Justice Department spokeswoman Mindy Tucker told reporters.
She said similar alerts have been issued to local law enforcement agencies "five or six times" since the September 11 attacks.
