A Russian border guard and six Afghan drug smugglers were shot dead overnight in fighting at the Tajik-Afghan border, said reports reaching in Alma Ata from Tajikistan's capital of Dushanbe.
This was the first time this year that a Russian guard was killed on the Tajik-Afghan border, Russian border guards' press service said.
Tajikistan has been a major trafficking route for drugs heading for Russia and western Europe from neighboring Afghanistan.
Most of the Tajik-Afghan border is patrolled by 11,000 Russian soldiers under an agreement between Russia and Tajikistan, one of the poorest of the former Soviet republics. Tajik patrolmen monitor only a tenth of the 1,340-kilometer border.
