US Raids on Afghanistan Continue for the Seventh Day
SUN, OCT 14, 2001
US air raids on Afghanistan enter into their seventh day as the Taliban still refuses to hand over Osama bin Laden, the main suspect for the Sept 11th attacks. Meanwhile, the Pentagon issued a statement admitting that one of its war planes had missed a military target and caused civilian casualties.

On Saturday, Al Jazeera television, based in Qatar broadcast pictures showing damage to homes and children injured by the US-led bombing raids on the Afghan capital of Kabul. The Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef also spoke of many civilian casualties in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. The day's air raid also targeted on the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad which is surrounded by training camps of the Al Qaeda network.

Also on Saturday, the US Defense Department released a statement admitting that a US Navy F-18 war plane had missed a military target at Kabul airport. The bomb hit a residential neighborhood one-and-a-half kilometers away, killing at least four people. The Pentagon said it "regretted the loss of any civilian life". Meanwhile, reports continue to come in about people fleeing Kabul with whatever they could carry.

Despite all this, Taliban's supreme leader Mullah Omar again refused to hand over Osama bin Laden and appealed to Muslims everywhere to help defend the country. The Al-Qaeda network, masterminded by bin Laden threatened to wage more suicide attacks against the US and Britain. Al-Queda also ordered US and British citizens as well as their Arab allies to leave the Arabian peninsula or face the consequences.
