Indonesia Aid for Afghan Refugees

Indonesia will give 5 billion rupiah (about 500,000 U.S. dollars) humanitarian assistance for Afghan Refugees in Pakistan.

Head of the Indonesian Red Cross Mar'ie Muhammad told reporters in Jakarta Sunday that the first phase of about 1 billion rupiah (100, 000 U.S. dollars) would be transferred to Pakistan for the purchase of food and medical supplies on Monday.

The assistance would then be handed over to the International Committee for the Red Cross to be channeled to the refugees, Mar' ie was quoted by the Jakarta Post.com online news service as saying.

It was reported that funds allocated are combined donations from, among others, the government, the House of Representatives and the Indonesian Ulemas Council.

There was no immediate information when the remaining assistance would be transferred to the estimated 2 million Afghan refugees who have crossed the border into Pakistan.
