Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri Sunday night condemned terrorism and expressed the country's support to fight it, but she stressed that violence must not be answered with violence.
"Violence should not always be responded to with violence," the president said in her address on the occasion of the Ascension day of the Prophet Muhammad at Istiqlal Mosque here.
Without touching on the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, Megawati reiterated that terrorism in whatever form should be rejected.
"Terror should however be opposed, as nobody wants to accept terrorism. Hence terror deserves punishment," she said.
Although she did not directly comment on the U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan, the president said no single individual, group or government should track and punish terrorists by summarily attacking another country.
If a certain country wants to find those responsible for terrorist activity, it must apply accepted international norms and not do as it likes.
"No one group or state should make its own rules in the use of force and then attack others," Megawati was quoted by the Antara News Agency Monday as saying.
The Indonesian government last week said that it is following with grave concern the military attacks against Afghanistan. There have also been strong public protests against the attacks in several cities of the country.
