The Kenyan government is on high alert following reported cases of anthrax in the United States that have sparked fresh terrorist fears, the East African Standard newspaper said on Monday.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Julius Meme said on Sunday that his government could not ignore the possibility of a terrorist attack on Kenya and therefore "we have taken all the necessary precautionary measures".
The country's relevant authorities have consequently alerted public and private health institutions to monitor all cases with extra keenness in a bid to prevent possible outbreak of anthrax..
Meme said anthrax was not new in Kenya and many people have contracted the disease before through eating contaminated meat, adding that "there is need to be extra sensitive in the new style of spreading the virus through mail".
He noted the new terrorist approach of spreading the virus could be very devastating to the country because of the spread in which it can move from one person to the other.
"The government has enough stock of antibiotics in store to be able to control any possible outbreak. Our hospitals are aware of the government' alert," Meme added.
