Although there have been no confirmed cases of anthrax outside the United States, fears of biochemical attacks have been fueled in many countries.
In Asia, Japan announced on Tuesday that the powder leaked from an airmail envelope in Fukushima last Sunday was not anthrax. The investigation continues into an anthrax-tainted letter believed to come from Malaysia. In response Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad cautioned against concluding that the letter was from his country.
In Australia and New Zealand, envelopes containing suspicious white powder were delivered to a U.S. consulate and other government buildings and businesses.
In the Middle East, an Israeli newspaper office evacuated its office in Jerusalem after receiving two suspicious letters. The Iraqi foreign ministry dismissed questions as to whether Iraq was involved in the spread of anthrax.
The U.S. anthrax scare has also spilled over into neighbouring Canada. Parts of the Parliament were sealed off on Monday as authorities investigated two separate incidents, in which employees developed rashes after handling the mail.
