U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft on Tuesday called for an end to hate crimes and discrimination against Arabs and other ethnic groups following the September 11 attacks.
Ashcroft, while meeting with Arab-American and Muslim and Sikh leaders in Washington to hear their concerns over hate crimes, said Americans should not take out their rage about the hijackings by committing hate crimes. Present at the meeting were the heads of the Islamic Institute, the Arab American Institute and other groups.
"The nation has suffered a great loss," said Ashcroft. Those who take out their anger on others "compound our loss."
The Justice Department has opened 170 investigations into hate crimes against Arabs, Muslims or Sikhs, involving shootings, death threats, arson and destruction of mosques.
