U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell called on India and Pakistan to make peace over the disputed region of Kashmir.
Powell arrived in India on Tuesday. He met with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee before flying on to China for an APEC meeting on Wednesday.
Powell came from Islamabad, where he urged the nuclear rivals to resume dialogue.
Indian officials have vowed to continue "punitive actions" and will be "ruthless" in dealing with alleged infiltration into the Indian controlled part of Kashmir.
Washington is eager to head off any flare-ups over Kashmir which might destabilise the region.
