The United States Department of Defense held a press briefing in Washington DC on Tuesday. Top U.S. military officials said that Taliban targets are now coming under particularly intense fire.
U.S. Marine Lieutenant General Gergory Newbold told reporters that about 100 aircraft were involved in recent sorties, including AC-130 Gunships. The General used combat video of recent target hits to illustrate to the press that attacks on terrorist targets and Taliban troops are effective, and accurate.
General Newbold said that the opposition forces in Northeast Afghanistan are moving toward an offensive at Mazar-e-Sharif. He said that the loss of that key Taliban stronghold would be "...a significant setback to the Taliban." General Newbold also indicated that there are signs that Northern Alliance forces are also advancing on other Taliban positions.
