Anthrax Scare Reported at S. African Police Station
WED, OCT 17, 2001
Fire fighters and disaster management personnel rushed to the Claremont police station in Cape Town, South Africa, early on Wednesday morning after a man reported that he had received a suspicious parcel containing an unknown substance.

The South African Press Association quoted police national spokesman Assistant Commissioner Joseph Ngobeni as saying that the Claremont resident brought the parcel to the station after it was delivered to his home.

It was thought the parcel might contain anthrax spores.

The entire building of the police station has been cordoned off and experts are still to test the substance.

Fear of bio-terrorist attacks have been sweeping the world in recent days.

At least 13 people have been exposed to the deadly bacterium in the United States and one has died. Envelopes containing the animal disease have been sent to media organizations as well as politicians.

Confirmed incidents have so far been restricted to the U.S. but a number of false alarms and hoaxes have been reported around the world.
