The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk has been loaded with heliborne special operations forces for possible action in Afghanistan, a defense official confirmed on Wednesday.
Helicopters and special forces troops were now aboard the carrier, which deployed from Japan without its normal complement of aircraft, said the official, who asked not to be identified.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Wednesday hinted at use of ground forces in Afghanistan, saying the U.S.-led alliance was preparing "to take more, further military action."
Blair told parliament that "we are in a process of establishing the ability to take more, further military action against the Taliban regime and the al-Qaeda network."
